Position Summary: 

Reporting to the Interpreter Services Supervisor, the Medical Interpreter must demonstrate proficiency, ability, and experience in communicating medical information accurately in both English and Spanish, as well as have the ability to identify and employ the appropriate mode of interpreting (e.g., consecutive, simultaneous, or summary). Serving the Limited English Proficient (LEP) patient, the Medical Interpreter must understand and follow the ethical principles of confidentiality, impartiality, respect, professionalism and integrity, accuracy and completeness and cultural responsiveness.


Salary Range: 


Rate    Minimum  $18.20   Midpoint  $19.98   Maximum  $21.77



Accurately collects and enters relevant data into spreadsheets

Accurately provides interpretation to the Limited English Proficient patients and visitors

Accurately translates documents into specified language, paying close attention to word meanings, sentence structure, grammar and punctuation

Actively seeks opportunities to bring language services to the Limited English Proficient

Communicates clearly and professionally

Complies with the Department's Service Level Agreement

Conducts handoffs at every shift change

Consistently and appropriately uses the queing system.  Logs in and out daily and at break/meal periods.

Consistently uses defined protocols for delivering language services

Effectively assists with training new interpreter staff and volunteers

Effectively operates equipment such as TDD, dual handset telephones, copy machines, etc.

Effectively represents the department at various meetings and on projects as assigned

Effectively uses department computer resources

Ensures translated materials are provided within specified time period

Maintains accurate documentation of services performed outside the queing system

Trains staff and physicians to access all language services



Required Qualifications:

Knowledge of medical terminology, anatomy, and physiology

Skill to communicate effectively with persons from various educational and socio-cultural backgrounds

Excellent grammatical, proofreading and editing skills in both languages

Ability to effectively communicate in a clear and concise manner

Basic understanding of Spanish/Latino cultural beliefs

Passing grade on the competency test that demonstrates ability to fluently speak, read and write in English and Spanish


Preferred Qualifications:

Knowledge of University policies and procedures

Demonstrated ability to fluently communicate in a language other than Spanish / English (i.e., American Sign Language, Korean Language)
